We are thrilled to announce the successful launch of the new emergency phone number, 990, in Belize's Cayo district! This number can be used to request fire, medical, or rescue services and gets routed to a professional emergency dispatch center. The project was made possible by a partnership between Empact Northwest, Belize Heroes, Trek Medics, and the Belize national fire service.
The launch of this emergency phone number was a result of the growing need for reliable and timely emergency services in the Cayo district. With the increase in population and the growth of urbanization, emergencies had become a regular occurrence. Requesting emergency assistance was difficult at best, requiring that residents know the 7 digit phone number for their local fire station. Worse, if the firefighters were on another call, these requests for help could often go unanswered.
Our team at Empact Northwest is proud to have been a part of this partnership, which worked tirelessly to ensure that the 990 emergency phone number was launched successfully. We spread the word about the new number announcements in local media outlets and the fire service is conducting training sessions in the community to ensure that people knew how to use the number and what to expect when they called for help.
